So let's say you're new to the world of crystals, apart from getting your head muddled with all the new crystal names and what they can do for you, you now hear "Are you cleansing your crystals?'

We get this question all the time, so we're here to sort this out for you 🙃

Why you need to cleanse your crystals

Crystals have energies, or vibes as like to say it. As much as they give out copious amounts of delicious healing energy, they also absorb anything that doesn't suit you, namely - negative energy.

Now negative energy is something you hear a lot about, but what exactly defines negative energy? We prefer to say it simply as, something/someone/somewhere that could potentially ruin your day.

It doesn't have to be with malicious intent, however it could possibly throw you off. A snide remark, or someone else's energy that just doesn't sit right.

You could even pick some negativity unintentionally simply walking past bad energy, so this always warrants a good weekly cleanse.

How to cleanse your crystals (and yourself if you'd like)

Using the bountiful Sun's powerful rays can also give a boost to your crystals, however there are some that fade in sunlight, such as Celestite and Amethyst.

These crystals are ok in the sun;

Lay your crystals where the sun hits in the morning for at least 4 hours, that ought to do the trick.

A favourite amongst many, the New Moon (usually 15 days after the Full Moon) and the Full Moon itself.

After washing (under the sink is fine) and drying your crystals set them out on the earth for their full moon bath. If you are unable to place them directly on the ground, any natural surface will work, we usually place them on a table in the balcony, but a windowsill or even a table near the window where you can see the moon (the most important in your intention!)

The next day, let them charge for a few hours in morning sunlight. Many crystals like Amethyst, Aquamarine, Citrine, Fluorite, Rose Quartz, and Smoky Quartz for example will fade in direct sunlight so we charge our crystals just for the sunrise and then pull them back inside.

SMOKE (Smudging)

Using Palo Santo or Sage

Smudging may also be used as a ritual tool to rid yourself — or your space — of negativity. This includes past traumas, bad experiences, or negative energies from others.

This may help you establish a positive environment for meditation or another ritual. Choosing to sit and let go of negative thoughts in a ritual like this sets your intention and dedication to self-improvement. Choosing to engage in ritual can be the beginning of your change in mindset.

Palo Santo which translates to "Holy Wood" , in the Shamanic history of South America from where it originates, Palo Santo is said to remove negativity and obstacles and attract good fortune.

They're part of the citrus family, with a relation to frankincense and myrrh, which is why the smoke emits a sweet scent.

The ritual of sage burning has its roots in Native American tradition. Today, people burn sage and other holy herbs to cleanse a space or environment of negative energy, to generate wisdom and clarity, and to promote healing.

Tradition also suggests that smudging can literally lift one’s spirits to aid anxiety, depression and mood disorders.

Choose whichever feels right to you.

Here's how;

To cleanse any space’s energy, simply light a stick and then extinguish the flame, gently waving the stick in the air or waving your hand over the stick, or with Sage, traditionally done in an Abalone Shell with a turkey feather. A fire proof dish, works just as well.

White smoke will be emitted from the smouldering stick, which can disperse around you or your space.

*We place our Palo Santo on a small piece of hot charcoal in a fire proof dish, so you don't have to worry about relighting it!

For crystals, hold each piece for at least 10 seconds, allowing it to be engulfed in the smoke, if you feel a particular piece of crystal hasn't been cleansed in a while, feel free to hold it much longer, use your intuition :)

You can use salt water from the ocean or simply put sea salt or Himalayan salt in a bowl of water, and allow your crystals to be immersed. The salt water cleanses the energy from the stones. Be sure to clean your crystals using clean water afterwards.

HOWEVER, some crystals can not be placed in water because they are too soft, or brittle, and water can cause some stones to fracture and break, or even dissolve! Be sure to look up your crystal and what cleansing is best for it.

Sound healing allows a single pitch or tone to wash over an area, bringing it into the same vibration as the tone. This can be accomplished using chanting, singing bowls, a tuning fork, or even a nice bell

You can place your crystals around, or even in the bowl for cleansing.

We use our Quartz Singing Bowl, it emits a beautiful tone that radiates throughout. We sometimes walk around with it throughout the house (slowly and carefully!) for a full cleanse.

This is an ancient method that relies on the theory that you're returning the crystals to their natural state of being.

  • Find a nice place that won't be disturbed by animals or humans.

  • Don't bury brittle, porous, or treated crystals, such as gypsum, pyrite, halite, selenite, or aqua aura quartz, as they may be damaged by this method.

  • You only need to bury your crystals a few inches deep.

  • Mark the spot so you can find it again!

  • If any of your crystals are terminated, place with the point down.

  • If it's a double-terminated crystal, consider using the salt treatment if it's a quartz; otherwise opt for the sunlight treatment or water and salt.

  • Leave your crystals buried for a minimum of one day (24 hours) and up to three days if you feel there is a great deal of toxic energies stored inside the crystals.

We sometimes use the earth in our plant pots!

Sea Salt or Himalayan Pink Salt

  • Quartz

  • Amethyst

  • Citrine

  • Rose quartz

  • Smoky quartz

  • Jasper

  • Agate

  • Chalcedony

  • Carnelian

You should never cleanse porous or soft crystals with salt, nor should you cleanse treated crystals with any type of salt.

  • Halite

  • Selenite

  • Gypsum

  • Desert rose

  • Aqua aura quartz (treated)

  • Pyrite

  • Tourmaline

Selenite (Our Favourite Method!)

CLEANSE, RECHARGE, AMPLIFY - This baby does it all.

Apart from cleansing itself automatically, it's properties make it an excellent energy source for cleansing, charging and amplifying other crystals as well!

This is probably the simplest method of cleansing because it only requires five to ten minutes

to complete the cleansing process.

Place the crystal you wish to cleanse beside the selenite or on the Selenite Slab (have it touch preferably) We like to leave ours either permanently on a Selenite Slab or at least 24 hours (it's really up to you, again, follow your intuition!)

Selenite is water solvent, so please do not place them in or around water!
